If you only have time for one day trip beyond the Golden Circle and South Coast, make it Snæfellsnes. This 90-kilometer peninsula on Iceland's west coast is often called 'Iceland in Miniature' because it contains virtually every type of Icelandic landscape in one compact area.
The star of the show is Kirkjufell. Iceland's most photographed mountain. This distinctive arrow-shaped peak, with its companion waterfall Kirkjufellsfoss, has graced countless magazine covers and even appeared in Game of Thrones. Seeing it in person is genuinely awe-inspiring, especially when clouds wrap around the summit.
At the western tip of the peninsula sits Snæfellsjökull, the glacier-capped volcano that inspired Jules Verne's 'Journey to the Centre of the Earth.' On clear days, you can see it from Reykjavik across the bay, and up close it has an almost mystical quality that has inspired legends for centuries.
The coastal villages of Arnarstapi and Hellnar are connected by a spectacular walking path along dramatic sea cliffs. Here you'll find natural stone arches, sea birds nesting on impossibly steep cliff faces, and the kind of raw coastal beauty that makes you forget about everything else.
Djúpalónssandur is another must-see. a black pebble beach littered with the rusted remains of a British trawler that wrecked here in 1948. Four 'lifting stones' sit on the beach, traditionally used to test the strength of aspiring fishermen. The heaviest, 'Fullsterkur,' weighs 154 kg.
Our private Snæfellsnes tour gives you the freedom to explore at your own pace, spending extra time at the spots that captivate you most. It's one of the most rewarding day trips in all of Iceland.
