- Day 1
South Coast Highlights
You collect your vehicle and point it toward the south coast. Seljalandsfoss comes first a narrow waterfall with a path behind it when conditions allow followed by Skógafoss, a straight drop of glacial water that throws up spray and, on brighter days, rainbows. From there you continue to Reynisfjara Black Sand Beach, backed by basalt columns and open to the North Atlantic. The nearby village of Vík makes an easy coffee stop. Farther east you turn off for Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon, where the path along the rim is simple and the views are some of the most delicate on the route. Glaciers and Iceland's highest peaks begin to fill the horizon as you cross into the Vatnajökull region. By evening you reach your accommodation near the national park.

- Day 2
Glacier Adventures in Vatnajökull National Park
Today is all about the glacier. In the morning you travel to Falljökull with local guides. Super jeeps handle the rougher valley track, then you hike the last section to the ice edge. Once crampons are on, you move at a steady pace, threading between crevasses and over compressed blue ice. After the glacier, you stop for lunch before driving to Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. A zodiac boat tour takes you into the quieter sections of the lagoon, closer to the calving face. Diamond Beach is just across the road. In the late afternoon you begin driving back west, arriving at your second hotel in time for dinner.

- Day 3
South Coast Highlights
Today you begin working your way back west along the south coast at a calmer tempo than day one. Fjaðrárgljúfur canyon is a natural first stop walking the rim with more time gives you a better sense of the scale and shape of the place. Depending on the weather and light, you might pause again in Vík or at Reynisfjara, or take a different stop along the way. The idea is not to repeat the first day exactly, but to use the extra time to see familiar places in new conditions. By late afternoon you reach a countryside hotel further west.
Fjaðrárgljúfur revisited · Flexible coastal stops
- Day 4
Southern Highlands Discovery
Today is structured around conditions rather than a fixed checklist. If the highland roads are open and recent weather has been kind, the day takes you into the Southern Highlands on tracks that most visitors never reach. The exact route depends on river levels, snow and your appetite for time in the vehicle versus time on foot. On a typical highland day you might combine rougher tracks, short walks to crater rims or viewpoints, and a quiet spot for a simple picnic lunch with no buildings in sight. Some routes include natural hot springs; others focus on wide open views and the raw textures of rock and ash. It is the kind of day that is hard to summarise in a brochure but tends to be the one people talk about when they get home. By late afternoon you return to lower ground and your accommodation.

- Day 5
Golden Circle Sightseeing
On your last day you turn back toward Reykjavík via the Golden Circle. Gullfoss is first, where the combination of moving water and the canyon around it rarely needs much introduction. From there you continue to the Geysir geothermal area, where geyser eruptions, steam and hot pools give a compact view of the volcanic system that underpins much of this itinerary. Lunch at Friðheimar greenhouse follows before you continue to Þingvellir National Park, where short walks connect viewpoints over the rift and the plain where Iceland's early parliament once met. A short drive then brings you back to Reykjavík.
